Liposuction involves the removal of unwanted fat from stubborn locations that are difficult to lose by normal diet and exercise. There are different body types and everyone has subtly different fat distribution. More commonly for women this is the thighs, waist, and love-handles and for men is more commonly the belly or lower abdomen. Liposuction can improve the contour and fullness in almost any area of the body where there is a disproportionate fat deposit. Liposuction alone works best for those that have good skin tone and small to moderate fat deposits.
Dr. Davison uses the SAFE liposuction technique, which stands for Separation, Aspiration, Fat Equalization. This is a technique that maximizes the removal of fat while minimizing bleeding and creates a smooth even result. Dr. Davison typically uses a Power-Assisted Liposuction machine to produce improved results.
Dr. Davison can preserve any fat removed for transfer elsewhere in the body. This is commonly done to either the breasts, butt (BBL or Brazilian butt lift), or face for rejuvenation. For small volumes, like in the face, this is done by hand. For larger volumes, such as the breast or buttock, this is done using a specialized infiltration pump and technique called EVL (Expansion Vibration Lipofilling).
Liposuction could be performed for patients of a variety of body weight but is ideal for those who are close to their ideal body weight. Liposuction is less beneficial for someone who is in the obese category or who has excess fat throughout the body, as they would be better to first lose weight by adapting their diet and lifestyle. Dr. Davison also works closely with the Bariatric surgeons at the MUHC who perform weight loss surgery for obese and morbidly obese patients. The role of plastic surgeons for these patients is to remove excess skin and isolated fat deposits after a successful weight loss.
